Leona couldn’t have been more than ten or eleven when Lavina stopped at a little table near the back of the community center.
Everything had been made by hand- quilts, cookies, crocheted angels… and this centerpiece.
The woman selling it apologized because one candle leaned just a little.
Lavinia smiled and said, “if I wanted perfect, I’d go to the department store.”
She carried it home tucked carefully under one arm.
Years later, Leona carried it down from the attic the very same way.
